Divine Mercy Sunday devotions set for April 16 at St. Mary’s Cathedral

COLORADO SPRINGS. The annual diocesan celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday will take place on April 16 at St. Mary’s Cathedral, 22 W. Kiowa St. in downtown Colorado Springs.
Confessions will begin at 1:30 p.m. Bishop James Golka will preside at exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with Divine Mercy devotions and Benediction prior to Mass at 3 p.m.

The Divine Mercy devotion stems from a series of apparitions by Jesus to Sister Faustina Kowalska, who was a member of the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy in Poland during the 1930s.

She recorded these messages in a diary that was later published and also directed the painting of the image of Christ that she saw with the words “Jesus I Trust in You.”
One of the requests that Jesus made to Sister Faustina was that a special feast day to be celebrated on the Sunday after Easter. Today, that feast is known as Divine Mercy Sunday, named by Pope St. John Paul II at her canonization on April 30, 2000.

To fittingly observe Divine Mercy Sunday, the faithful should celebrate the feast on the Sunday after Easter, sincerely repent of all sins, place complete trust in Jesus, go to confession, receive Holy Communion on the day of the feast, venerate the Divine Mercy image, and be mercful to others through our actions, words and prayers on their behalf.
