Jerry Weiss, longtime building committee member, dies Aug. 14 at age 98
COLORADO SPRINGS. Gerald “Jerry” Weiss, a longtime parish and diocesan volunteer, died Aug. 14 at age 98. Mass of Christian Burial was held Aug. 28 at Corpus Christi Church.
He was born in 1926 in Imperial, Nebraska, the fifth of nine children born to Clayton and Mary Weiss.
After graduating from Chase County High School, he served in the U.S. Navy as a radio operator in the South Pacific during World War II.
He married Sue Kiely and the couple had four children. They were married for 54 years.
Weiss later served as City Engineer for Colorado Springs from 1964-1969 and as a consulting engineer for the rest of his professional career. The construction projects he worked on included dams, power lines, utility and street construction projects. One of the larger projects he worked was as resident engineer for the construction of the Colorado Springs Airport runways in 1991.
Weiss also renovated two historical houses and researched their histories.
In retirement, Jerry donated time to build handicap facilities for those in need. He volunteered for many years at Corpus Christi Parish and the John Zay Guest House at Penrose Hospital.
He also served for more than two decades on the Diocese of Colorado Springs Building and Properties Committee, stepping down in 2018.
He helped design, plant and maintain the median flower bed sponsored by the Springs in Bloom program in his neighborhood.
He is survived by daughters Anne Weiss and Mary Weiss; sons James (Kathi) Weiss and Charles (Loriann) Weiss, grandchildren Clay, Catrina and Bella Weiss; and sister Mary Ann Stinnette.
